Roll Out Smash is a play-action rollout pass out of Pistol Weak Slot that gives the QB a true Smash concept to the boundary. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route while the inside slot receiver sits on a quick out underneath, creating a high low stretch on the flat and deep third defenders. On the backside, the single receiver runs a deep post breaking away from the rollout, giving the QB a bail out throw if he has to reverse field. This is a classic Cover 2 beater: the primary read is the corner route stretching the deep half defender, then working down to the out route in the flat if the corner sits deep.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two high safeties pre snap, this signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells that this smash concept is designed to exploit. If the flat defender widens with the rollout, the out route should come open quickly underneath for an easy completion. Key the deep half safety on the rollout side, if he sits on the corner route the out route is open, if he jumps the out the corner route is open behind him. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the flat or lurking underneath, this can jump the out route and bait a QB throw into a pick. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the corner side gets beat easily by the corner route, so check corner alignment and safety depth before the snap.
Usage Tips
Check pre snap for two deep safeties before the snap since this play is built to attack Cover 2 with the smash concept on the boundary.
Roll the QB out with the play action fake and get width quickly to sell the rollout, this widens the flat defender and opens throwing lanes to the out route.
Use the corner route as your first read against Cover 2 or Cover 4, then come down to the flat out if the deep defender jumps the corner.
Keep the backside post in your progression as a home run shot if the defense rolls coverage away from the rollout side.
