Wide Zone out of Pistol Doubles Y Off Stack is an outside zone run play that sends the HB laterally toward the play side edge, reading the stretch flow of the offensive line before deciding to bounce, bang, or bend the run. The line flows in unison to the play side, stalking blockers on the edge and creating a wall for the HB to press before cutting upfield off his blocking track. This is a pure zone run play designed to punish overaggressive gap-shooting linebackers and light boxes, with the primary read progression starting at the play side edge defender then working back inside through each blocking crease as the HB presses the line.
Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker first, since a hard crash inside opens the bounce lane outside the stacked receivers. Watch the flow of the second level linebackers post-snap, if they overrun the zone stretch or get washed by the double team, cut the HB upfield immediately. Identify single-high shells (3-4 or 4-3 under fronts) as the best matchup for this run, since it forces linebackers into conflict with the zone flow before they can fill. Beware of user-controlled linebackers sitting in the B-gap or C-gap, as a disciplined defender who reads the stretch action can blow up the cutback lane. Heavy fronts with an extra defensive lineman or a stacked box (eight or more in the box) shut this play down, so bail into a pass or hot route adjustment if the defense shows overload pre-snap.
Check the box count before the snap and only run Wide Zone into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Use pre-snap motion or a shift to identify if the defense is playing zone or man across from the stack alignment, since off coverage on the stacked receivers signals room to bounce outside.
Hot route the play side TE or slot receiver into a quick stalk or arrow route if you see a blitz coming off the edge to hold the flow defender.
Pair this with HB Dive and HB Split Zone from the same set so the defense cannot sit on outside zone tendencies, then hit them with Read Option or RPO Zone Alert Bubble once linebackers start crashing the edge.
Best used on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action shots like PA Boot Slide or PA Post Shot later in the series.
