PA Boot Slide is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Doubles Y Off Stack that pulls the QB toward the boundary while the offense sells run action up front. The Y off the stack releases on a deep corner route up the sideline, a second receiver runs a slide route underneath that flattens out toward the boot side as a checkdown, and the backside X runs a deep drag across the middle that can act as a crosser against man coverage. This is a play-action man and zone beater with a clear high low progression: read the corner route first for the explosive shot, then work down to the flat slide route as the roll carries the QB outside the pocket.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a hard edge crash from the defensive end or outside linebacker on the play-action fake, since a disciplined edge defender can string out the boot and force an early checkdown. Key the flat zone defender on the boot side pre-snap, if a linebacker or corner sits shallow in the flat they can jump the slide route and undercut the throw. Identify two-high shells before the snap, since a deep half or deep third safety who stays disciplined can close on the corner route and turn it into a contested throw or pick. Look for a user-controlled defender flowing hard toward the boot side immediately after the snap, this is the biggest threat to both the flat route and the deep corner. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal defensive alignment to attack, since the corner route can win over the top while the drag and slide give the QB layered options if he sees a blitz.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into stepping up on the run fake before the QB rolls out. Check the flat and deep third defender on the boot side before the snap, if the corner sits low on the sideline the deep corner route will be tight so be ready to reset to the underneath slide route instead. Hot route the backside drag into a shallow cross if you see man coverage across the board to give yourself an easy rhythm throw while rolling away from pressure. This play pairs well with HB Dive and Wide Zone from the same set since the run action looks identical, forcing linebackers to bite on early downs before you hit them with the boot on second or third and short. Save PA Boot Slide for first and second down situations where defenses are honoring the run, since predictable pass down calls invite extra rush from the edge that can collapse the pocket before the QB fully clears the boot.
