Jet PA Boot is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Doubles Y Off Stack that opens with jet motion across the backfield to hold linebackers and second level defenders before the fake handoff. Off the fake, the quarterback boots to the right behind the line, with the outside receiver on that side pushing vertical up the seam on a deep corner route while the slot receiver runs a shallow drag underneath from the opposite side of the formation. The backside receiver climbs a deep dig or comeback breaking back toward the boot side, giving the quarterback a clear high low read: the deep corner route first, the underneath drag second, with the boot action creating an easy roll away from backside pressure.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a hard edge blitz from the boot side, since the play design has no extra protection help outside the offensive line and can get the quarterback hit before he sets his feet. Cover 3 defenders sinking deep on the boot side flat can jump the corner route, so check if the cornerback stays flat footed at the snap instead of retreating with depth. Man coverage on the drag route is where this play struggles most, since a linebacker with a tight man fit and no leverage issues can shadow the shallow crosser all the way through. If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap and rotates late into a boot side robber look, the deep corner route will be squeezed and the quarterback should already be progressing to the drag. Zone defenses that widen their flat defender with the jet motion open up a throwing lane underneath, so track whether the flat defender bites on the fake jet sweep before committing to coverage responsibilities.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second and short so the jet motion and play fake actually threaten the defense and freeze the linebackers.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap. If you see a single high safety cheating toward the boot side, expect the corner route to be taken away and lean on the underneath drag instead.
Hot route the backside dig into a deeper post if you are facing two deep shells, since the natural boot spacing already stresses the flat and deep corner zones.
Pair this with Jet HB Zone or Read Option from the same set so the jet motion look is consistent and defenders cannot key run versus pass off the initial action.
Roll with the quarterback using the right stick to extend the play if the primary corner route is covered, since the boot naturally buys extra time against edge pressure.
