Flanker Spot out of Pistol Doubles Y Off Stack is the classic Spot concept built to attack Cover 3 and short zone drops. The backside receiver runs a deep clearout while the front side stacks a corner route, a quick hitch to the flat, and a short pivot/spot route underneath from the slot, with the back releasing to the opposite flat as the checkdown. Read the flat defender first: if he sits on the hitch, throw the spot route sitting down in the hole behind him, and if he widens with the flat route, the pivot window opens for an easy completion.
Defensive Reads
Identify the flat defender pre-snap, this play lives or dies on whether that defender widens or sits, so watch his depth at the snap. Zone drops from linebackers are the biggest threat, a user-controlled backer sinking into the spot window can jump the underneath route and bait a pick six. Cover 3 sky and Cover 3 cloud shells are the primary weakness this concept exploits, especially when the flat defender is a linebacker with slower reaction time than a corner. Watch for a lurking safety cheating toward the trips or stack side pre-snap, that indicates a possible Cover 4 or Cover 6 shell that can squeeze the spot route. Man coverage with an overhang blitzer erases the easy answers here, so key on late-arriving pressure off the edge that beats the back's release into the flat.
Usage Tips
Call this on third and short to medium since the spot route sits in the natural void of curl to flat zone coverage.
Check the pre-snap corner alignment: if you see soft outside leverage or a two high shell rolling to Cover 3, this concept is designed to punish that exact shell.
Hot route the backside deep route into a slant or drag against man coverage looks since the clearout does nothing for you if the defense shows Cover 1 or Cover 0.
Use the running back's flat release as your answer against blitz looks, it gets the ball out fast and resets the down.
Pair this with Four Verticals from the same set to keep the defense honest on deep coverage rotation, then come back to Flanker Spot once they start sitting on shorter zones.
