Jet PA Y Leak is a play-action shot play out of Pistol Doubles Y Off Stack that uses jet motion across the backfield to freeze linebackers before the QB fakes the handoff. The stacked receiver runs a corner route up the sideline while the Y (tight end) leaks out of the play-action fake on a delayed crosser underneath, working from the strong side across the middle of the field, with a shallow drag from the backside receiver and a deep clearing route on the far side. The primary read starts with the leaking Y on the delayed crosser since the play-action and jet motion combo is designed to hold linebackers and open that middle void, then progresses to the corner route if the safety bites on the run fake.
Defensive Reads
Read the linebacker depth immediately after the snap. If they step up hard on the play-action fake, the leaking Y will be wide open in the shallow to intermediate middle. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap. Two high shells take away the corner route but often leave the underneath crosser unaccounted for. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the Y leak route since this is the primary target and good defenders will sit on it after seeing the play on tape. Cover 3 zone drops with a hard flowing linebacker to the jet motion side create natural throwing lanes for the leak route, so attack that void quickly before the zone reconstitutes. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the corner route gets exposed if the corner bites on the play-action, so track the CB's hips at the snap.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs when the defense is keying run based on personnel and formation tendencies since the jet motion and play-action combo punishes overaggressive run fits.
Check the second level pre-snap. If linebackers are sitting shallow or showing blitz, the Y leak route will have a wide throwing lane once they bite on the fake.
Against single high safety looks, prioritize the corner route since the safety often has to respect the run and cheats late.
Pair this with HB Dive or Jet HB Zone earlier in a drive so the defense respects the jet sweep action, then hit them with this shot play once they start crashing down on motion.
If the user drops a spy or lurk defender in the shallow crossing lane, hot route the drag to a deeper in-route to clear the traffic and give your QB a cleaner window.
