Four Verticals out of Pistol Doubles Y Off Stack sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field, with the stacked receiver to the left running a skinny post while the outside receiver on that side breaks into a corner route from depth. The two receivers to the right run straight seam routes up the numbers, and the RB stays in for pass protection based on the blue blocking icon at the back of the diagram. This is a classic zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by overloading the deep thirds and forcing the safeties to choose, with the primary read starting on the seam to the strength side before working to the post-corner combo away from the stack.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap identify safety depth and spacing since two safeties splitting the field wide open signals Cover 2 and a tight single high safety signals Cover 3, both of which this concept is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defenders and underneath zone droppers after the snap because if they sink too deep trying to help on the seams, the shallow area opens up for a checkdown or scramble lane. Key on the corner route from the stack side since a user controlled safety jumping that route early signals man coverage or a robber technique, which means you should climb the post route immediately. Look for nickel or dime packages showing two high shells presnap that rotate to a single high safety at the snap, since that disguised rotation is the biggest threat to this play and can bait a bad throw into the rotating defender. This concept struggles against a Cover 4 quarters shell with disciplined deep defenders staying square, so if you see four defenders bailing deep at the snap with no natural void, be ready to check down rather than force a vertical throw.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for two-high or single-high safety alignment before the snap since this play is built to punish exactly those shells. Against Cover 2 target the seam routes on the outside since the corner route occupies the deep half defender and opens a throwing window behind the underneath zone. Against Cover 3 work the post route off the stack since it splits the deep third defender and creates a natural throwing lane if the safety cheats too far to either side. Use hot routes to convert one of the inside seams into a shallow drag or spot route if you diagnose a heavy blitz look pre-snap, giving yourself a quick outlet. Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or RPO Zone Alert Bubble earlier in a series so the defense respects underneath run and screen action, then hit Four Verticals when they start crashing linebackers downhill. Best called on early downs or obvious passing situations where you have time in the pocket, since all four routes take time to develop vertically.
