HB Dive out of Pistol Doubles Y Off Stack is a straight downhill run play that sends the HB directly through the A gap behind the QB. The offensive line blocks a standard inside zone/dive scheme, with the center and guards climbing to the second level while the play side tackle and guard combo the down lineman to seal the interior. This is a pure run play designed to punish light boxes and overpursuing defenses, with no play-action or RPO element attached. The primary read is the A gap first, and if it is clogged the HB should bounce to the nearest crease off the double team blocks rather than try to force it up the middle.
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a stacked, tight alignment signals a downhill run blitz that can blow up the dive before it develops. Identify one high safety looks (Cover 3 or Cover 1) as a green light for this play, since the extra man in the box is usually a linebacker rather than a safety sneaking down. Beware six or seven man fronts with an extra defender walked into the box, as this is the primary counter to HB Dive and will require you to check into a perimeter run or RPO instead. Post-snap, key the play side guard's ability to climb to the second level cleanly, since a penetrating defensive tackle who blows up the double team kills the play immediately. User-controlled defenders spying the A gap or crashing down hard off the edge are the biggest threat, so have a quick RPO or bubble screen check ready if you see this pre-snap alignment repeatedly.
Call this play when you see six or fewer defenders in the box, since the dive is built to win on numbers up front rather than deception.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to see if linebackers creep toward the line, which tells you they are keying the run.
Pair this with Jet HB Zone and HB Split Zone from the same set so defenses cannot sit on one blocking scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Mix in Read Option and RPO Zone Alert Bubble after running Dive a few times so the defense has to respect both the give and the perimeter throw off similar formation looks.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want a low risk gain to stay on schedule and set up explosive shots later in the drive.
