Breakdown
Read Option is a pistol run play that puts the QB in a zone read look with the HB offset behind him, giving the offense a give or keep decision at the mesh point based on the backside defensive end. The offensive line blocks a zone scheme to the play side while the QB reads the unblocked edge defender to determine whether to hand off or pull and attack the alley himself. With two receivers stacked to one side and a single receiver split to the other, this is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap integrity rather than a specific coverage shell.
Defensive Reads
Watch the backside defensive end pre-snap: if he is disciplined and stays home on the QB, force the give and rely on the interior zone blocking. Stacked defensive fronts with an extra linebacker crashing downhill can blow up the zone scheme, so look for a 4-3 or 3-4 under front with fast flowing linebackers. User the backside contain defender if you suspect a zone read to shut down the QB keep lane and force the offense into predictable handoffs. Safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap signal run support, which negates the numbers advantage this play relies on. Watch for a scraping linebacker reading the mesh point quickly, as a fast diagnosing backer can meet the HB in the hole before the zone blocks develop.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a numbers advantage.
Identify the backside defensive end alignment since he is the actual read key: if he crashes down on the HB, pull the ball and attack the edge with the QB.
Use this play on early downs in run heavy sequences to set up Jet PA Boot and PA Boot Slide off the same Pistol action later in the series.
Pair this with HB Dive and Wide Zone from the same set to keep the defense guessing on gap versus zone run fits.
Against aggressive edge defenders who consistently crash down, the QB keep read becomes a chunk gain, so do not be afraid to pull it on early downs.
