Cover 3 Cloud is a zone defense out of the Nickel 2-4 Load set that rolls the corner down to the flat while the safety rotates over the top, creating a cloud (or squat) technique to the field. The diagram shows three deep zone droppers spanning the top of the screen, an underneath hook/curl defender working the middle purple zone, two flat/curl-flat defenders sitting shorter with the tan zones, and a tight seam/flat defender in the teal zone to the boundary, all supported by a four man rush indicated by the red arrows. This is a zone beater against horizontal stretch concepts, and the primary read starts with the flat defender's landmark before working to the underneath hook zone and finally the deep thirds.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check corner depth and safety alignment since a cloud corner will show tighter to the line than a traditional Cover 3 sky corner who bails at the snap. This look is strong against smash concepts and flat/curl combinations to the boundary because the cloud corner has help underneath from the flat defender. It is vulnerable to quick slants and drag routes attacking the vacated area behind the rolled down corner, so watch for user pressure timing a blitz off that edge. Post-snap, key the middle hook defender's drop since he is the primary robber against crossing routes and digs coming from the opposite hash. Four verticals and deep overs can stress the single high safety if he bites on play action, so track his eyes and depth before committing to a deep shot.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense rotates the corner down, since Cover 3 Cloud tips its hand when the corner squats instead of bailing deep.
Call this on early downs when you want to funnel the running back or slot receiver into the flat where the cloud corner and hook defender can converge for a quick tackle.
Combine this with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Buzz Mable in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the corner's run/pass reaction based on one static look.
Hot route the underneath hook defender to carry vertical seam routes if you are seeing a lot of seam shots, since the cloud technique leaves a slight window between the flat and deep third.
Pair with Cover 3 Match on obvious passing downs to disguise whether you are in spot drop or match zone principles behind the same shell.
