Tampa 2 out of the Nickel 2-4 Load set drops both outside corners into deep third zones while the two deep safeties sink into deep half landmarks, and the Mike linebacker (the olive zone) runs the middle seam vertically to rob the deep middle, closing the traditional Cover 2 hole. Underneath, the two inside linebackers sit in curl-to-flat zones and the slot corners hold shallow flat zones, giving this coverage five underneath defenders and three deep defenders once the Mike gets to his drop. This is a zone coverage shell built to shut down man beaters and vertical shots up the seams, forcing the quarterback to check down or throw underneath into a crowded shell rather than attack deep.
Watch for the offense stacking receivers or running vertical stems immediately off the snap, since that is the classic tell for four verticals designed to attack the seams this coverage protects. Key the Mike linebacker drop, if the user jumps him too early into a flat zone the deep middle opens up for a big play, so discipline in his backpedal is critical. Post-snap, look at the quarterback's eyes drifting to the middle of the field, that usually signals a deep in or post route trying to split the safeties, which the robbing linebacker should undercut. This shell is vulnerable to quick game and shallow crosses that attack the flat before the corners and slot defenders can sink, so expect quick outs or bunch rub routes to be the counter. Heavy blitz packages or aggressive nano blitzes can be effective against this play since only five defenders are underneath, leaving one on one matchups if any zone defender bites on a double move.
Call this on third and long or in two minute situations where you expect the offense to test the deep middle with a post or seam route, since the Mike linebacker is specifically designed to rob that throw. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or double posts, both of which this coverage naturally counters if the Mike gets a clean drop. Use the flat zone defenders to squat on quick outs and shallow crosses, then let your user defender jump any curl or dig route that settles in the intermediate middle. Pair this call with Cover 3 Buzz Mable or Cover 4 Quarters in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on a single deep safety shell before the snap. Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel since the underneath defenders are dropping into zones rather than filling run fits aggressively.
