Double Bracket is a Man To Man tagged play out of 2-4 Load Nickel that shows four receivers releasing vertically off the line with straight downfield stems, all four route arrows pointing straight down the field. This is a designed man beater built to attack matchups with vertical stress rather than a horizontal zone-stretch concept. The primary read progression starts with the two inside receivers since they are bracketed by underneath defenders and safeties over the top, then works outside to the two boundary vertical routes if the inside seams are choked off.
Pre-snap, identify press man corners on the outside receivers and safeties shaded toward the slot, since this confirms the offense is expecting a man bracket and the seams will be the primary target. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the linebackers carry the inside verticals with outside leverage you can squeeze the throwing window and force a contested catch or pass breakup. This play struggles against zone shells like Cover 3 Match or Cover 4 Quarters since the vertical stems run directly into deep zone defenders who can pattern match and rob the throw. User a rangy safety or linebacker to sit in the middle of the field as a lurk defender, reading the quarterback eyes on the inside seam release to jump the throw before it develops. Disguise man coverage with a late safety rotation into Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud to bait the quarterback into throwing the seam early, then close with the deep safety for a turnover opportunity.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties shaded over the slot receivers that is your confirmation this is a true man bracket look and you should target the seam with your inside receiver on a slight throw before the safety can close.
Use this play on third and long or in two minute situations where you need a vertical shot play against man coverage, since the route design does not offer easy underneath outlets.
Hot route the outside receivers into quicker breaking routes like slants or comebacks if you diagnose off coverage, since the pure vertical stem is only live against tight press man.
Pair this call with Cover 1 Robber or Cover 2 Man from the same set on early downs to bait the defense into thinking you are running similar man concepts, then hit Double Bracket vertically once the defense commits to jumping short routes.
Snap the ball with tempo after motioning a receiver across the formation to confirm man coverage, since a defender following the motion man locks in your read for where the bracket will be tightest.
