Cover 3 Buzz Mable is a zone coverage call out of the 2-4 Load Nickel front that drops three deep defenders and buzzes underneath zones to take away quick and intermediate throws. Defensive Reads
Read the quarterback's helmet to identify if he is attacking the deep middle third first, since that safety is your primary post snap key. Watch for crossing routes working from the numbers toward the middle of the field, this coverage is built to have underneath zone defenders squeeze and rob those throws. If the offense runs vertical seams up the numbers, know that this shell is vulnerable to a well timed seam throw between the buzzing defender and the deep third corner. Blitz heavy protections or max protect play action can hold your underneath defenders in their drops too long, so be ready to user the buzz defender manually if you see a receiver settling into the void. Against trips or bunch formations, check if the underneath defender is late buzzing to the strong side, since that late rotation is the main leak offenses will attack with quick game concepts.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect the offense to test intermediate zones with crossers or dig routes. Check the pre snap alignment of the offense's slot receivers, if they are stacked or bunched, buzz the underneath defender toward the strength to prevent easy rubs. Use the flat defenders' zone drop to squat on quick outs and speed outs, since the buzz technique lets that defender sit and read the quarterback's eyes before breaking. Pair this play with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud in your play calling sequence so the offense cannot key on where the extra run support or buzz defender is coming from. Against spread sets, motion your slot corner or use a pre snap shift to disguise which underneath zone is buzzing so quarterbacks cannot pre determine the soft spot in coverage.
