Cover 4 Quarters is the base zone defense out of the Nickel 2-4 Load set, deploying four deep quarter defenders across the top with the two outside corners reading the vertical release before sinking to their deep quarter. Underneath, the four defenders (two linebackers and the slot corners/safeties shown with red zone drop arrows) spill into short and intermediate zones to wall off crossers and hooks, with the middle linebacker area showing a hook-to-curl drop. This is a zone beater against man concepts and a solid answer to four verticals or go routes, since each quarter defender has deep help, but it is vulnerable to underneath sit routes and quick outs if the linebackers overrun their drops. Primary read progression starts with the deep safeties keying any vertical stem from the outside receivers, then working down to the flat and curl zones underneath if no deep threat materializes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are deep at 10-12 yards with corners aligned outside, you are likely getting standard Quarters shell, which is a green light for the offense to attack the seams and flats. Post-snap, watch the flat defenders and hook defenders fill their zones quickly, since any lurking linebacker sitting in the shallow crosser or drag zone signals this coverage rather than man. This shell shuts down four verticals and deep out combinations because every deep zone has a defender with eyes on the quarterback, forcing tight-window throws. It is exposed against quick game concepts like slants, stick routes, and RPO bubble screens if the underneath defenders drop too deep too fast, so watch linebacker depth at the snap for hesitation. Nano blitz packages and delayed pressure off the edge can work well with this coverage since the deep four are locked into zone drops and will not immediately help against a hot route beating a slow-developing rush.

Call Cover 4 Quarters on early downs or second-and-medium when you want a safe shell against play-action and deep shots without selling out to the run.
Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for stacked or bunched receivers on the outside, since Quarters can get picked on rub routes if your corners are not disciplined with their re-route technique.
User the deep safety over the offense's top vertical threat and let the zone drops handle everything underneath, trusting your linebackers to sink into curl and hook zones.
