The four underneath defenders (marked with squares) man up on inside eligibles and trail their assignments downfield, while the linebacker with the diagonal red arrow crossing into the middle of the field shows a man match responsibility on a slot or tight end release. This is a man beater against static formations because it locks eyes on receivers, but the two deep safeties cap it against vertical shots, so the primary read progression starts with identifying which underneath defender has the most inside leverage before working through your route combination against the trail technique.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, confirm both safeties are aligned deep and split evenly, which signals the two deep shell that caps go routes and deep posts. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap since the diagonal red arrow shows he is sprinting to match a receiver in man, leaving a potential window underneath if the offense releases quickly out of the backfield. Post-snap, key on your underneath defenders' hip position relative to their receiver, if they lose outside leverage on a speed out or slant, that is where the user should look to jump the route. This coverage is vulnerable to rub routes and pick concepts that create natural picks against man technique, so watch for stacked or bunch releases pre-snap. Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to run mesh or shallow crosses that man coverage struggles to stay attached to underneath. Use the flat defenders as your spy against RPOs and screens since their man technique still allows them to squeeze the mesh point on run fits.
