Nickel Blitz 0 is a zero blitz call out of the 2-4 Load Mug front in Nickel personnel, sending five defenders after the quarterback while leaving zero deep safety help. The diagram shows all five underneath defenders (four squares and a circle) crashing downhill on blitz arrows, with the two outside X defenders and the two deep X safeties bailing into man coverage across the formation width. Every eligible receiver is locked in press or trail man coverage with no free safety over the top, so the primary read for the defense is simply timing the pressure to disrupt the quarterback before any receiver wins their one on one matchup down the field.
Defensive Reads
Watch the quarterback's eyes immediately after the snap since there is no safety help, any late blitz recognition means a receiver is already open in man coverage. Key on running backs and tight ends checking into the backfield as blitz beaters, since they are the quickest answer against zero coverage and will get the ball out before your rush arrives. Identify quick game concepts like slants, speed outs, and hitches pre-snap, as these are the primary counters offenses use against Cover 0 looks. If the offense spreads into four or five wide with no backfield help, expect the quarterback to throw off rhythm to the shortest route, so your user defender should jump the nearest crossing route rather than staying disciplined in a deep drop. Beware trips bunch formations that can rub off man defenders at the snap, this is the main pre-snap alignment that neutralizes this blitz.
Usage Tips
Call this on third and long or in two minute situations where the offense is likely to take a shotgun five step drop, since the extra rushers get home before deep routes develop. Check pre-snap for trips or bunch formations that can create natural rubs against your man defenders, and consider audibling a corner or safety to shade toward the strength if you see stack alignment. User the most athletic blitzer, usually a slot corner or safety off the edge, so you control the free rusher and can bait the quarterback into a quick throw. Pair this with Cover 1 LB Blitz or LB Blitz 0 earlier in a series so the offense cannot key blitz tells off your pre-snap disguise, then dial up Nickel Blitz 0 once they settle into a drop back rhythm. Avoid calling this against heavy play-action or RPO offenses on early downs since a free running back leak or misdirection can exploit the vacated underneath zones.
