Defensive Reads

Watch the offensive line's helmets before the snap, if the center or guards are shading toward the interior gaps they may already be sliding protection toward the twist, so consider audibling the stunt direction. Post snap, key the quarterback's eyes to the flat, since the outside linebackers dropping into the flat zones are the first defenders to break on quick outs or flare routes from the backfield. This play beats trips or bunch formations that rely on quick timing throws because the interior pressure collapses the pocket before deep combo routes develop. It gets exposed by max protect play action rollouts, since the four man rush with a twist can be picked up cleanly, leaving the deep third defenders isolated against verticals if the line stunt does not generate immediate pressure.
Usage Tips
Call LB De Twist 3 on passing downs where the offense is likely to max protect, since the interior line twist is designed to beat base pass sets rather than chip help from running backs. Use it after showing Cover 3 Cloud or Cover 3 Sky earlier in the series so the quarterback reads the same deep shell presnap and does not anticipate the interior stunt. Manually user the middle hook defender to rob any drag or crosser working through the honey hole while trusting the zone drops on the outside to handle flat and deep threats. This play shines on second and long or third and medium when offenses lean on quick game concepts, since the stunt disrupts the timing quarterbacks need for hitches and slants. Mix this in with Nickel Blitz 2 and Nickel Blitz 1 from the same set so opponents cannot key on backfield spacing to diagnose whether a blitz or a coverage shell is coming.
