The diagram shows the offensive line down in a heavy blocking surface with a guard pulling across the formation to lead through the hole while the fullback and lead blocker climb to the point of attack, sealing off the edge for the HB. This is strictly a run play with no route concept or pass option, so the primary read progression is simple: find the pulling guard's block, press the hole he opens, and cut off his hip based on how the defensive front reacts.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the defense is in a true goal line front with six or more men crowding the line of scrimmage, since this shows they expect a power run. Watch linebacker depth: if they are crashing downhill immediately at the snap, they are keying the pulling guard and will fill the hole fast. Man defenders lined up tight over the fullback or lead blocker signal a scheme fit designed to blow up the lead block before it develops. User the middle linebacker or a safety and key the guard's pull immediately after the snap to beat this play, since shooting the gap he vacates kills the run before it starts. If the defense shows an unbalanced front shaded toward the play side, expect this run to get stuffed unless you counter with a play going the opposite direction on the next snap.
Usage Tips
Use this play inside the five yard line or on third and short when you need a guaranteed push at the point of attack.
Pre-snap, check the box count and identify if the defense has stacked extra defenders inside the tackles, since Power G struggles against loaded fronts with no numbers advantage.
If the defense shows a heavy goal line front with defenders crashing hard inside, consider hot routing the fullback to adjust his block angle to seal the edge defender instead of climbing straight ahead.
Pair this with HB Counter Wk and Power O in the same set to keep the defense guessing on gap direction, since all three use similar pulling linemen but attack different creases.
Mix in QB Sneak and FB Dive from this formation to punish defenses that overpursue outside on Power G, keeping the interior honest.
