PA Waggle out of Goal Line Offense is a play-action rollout play that sells short yardage or goal line run action before the QB boots to the flat side. The blocking scheme fakes a downhill run look with heavy personnel, holding linebackers and safeties for a beat before the QB rolls out with a tight end or fullback releasing into the flat and a receiver working a deeper crossing or corner route behind it. This is a man beater in tight red zone and goal line spots because the rollout puts the QB on the edge with a run pass option feel, and the primary read progression starts with the flat route underneath before working back to the deeper crossing route if the flat defender squats.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If they bite hard on the run fake and step up, the flat route and crossing route both have room to work against man or zone. Identify if the defense is in a Cover 0 or Cover 1 man look pre-snap by checking single high safety alignment, since the crossing route behind the flat is a strong answer to man coverage in tight spaces. Key the flat defender post-snap. If he sits on the flat route, throw the deeper crosser working behind him. If he chases the crosser, dump it to the flat for an easy pitch and catch. Watch for contain defenders or a spy staying home on the rollout side, since a disciplined edge defender or user controlled linebacker can blow up the play by not respecting the run fake and squeezing the boot. Cover 3 or zone heavy goal line packages with an extra defender underneath can shut this down if the flat and crosser are both taken away, so have a backside hot route ready as your answer.
Use this near the goal line or in short yardage packages where the defense expects HB Dive, FB Dive, or Power O based on your personnel grouping and down and distance tendencies.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense stacks the line with extra defenders inside the tackles expecting run, the play action freeze is more effective and the flat route opens faster.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you see man coverage across the formation, giving yourself an outlet if the rollout side gets clogged.
Pair this with FB Dive and QB Sneak in your play calling sequence to condition the defense into biting on run action, then hit them with PA Waggle once they start crashing linebackers downhill.
Roll the pocket away from pressure by checking the defensive line alignment pre-snap, since the goal line personnel means less blocking help and edge pressure can collapse the play fast if the fake does not hold defenders.
