Mtn PA Y-Corner is a play-action pass out of Goal Line Offense 23 personnel that uses a jet motion sweep look to sell the run before the QB pulls and rolls into the pocket. The Y (tight end) runs a corner route from in-tight alignment, breaking outside and up the sideline as the primary man-beater winning on outside leverage, while a receiver from the backfield area works an over route crossing the field underneath as a zone-beater checkdown, and a shallow drag/flat route sits underneath as a third option. The line and remaining backs sell the run fake before picking up protection, making this a play-action pass designed to punish linebackers and safeties who bite on the run action.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a run-heavy front with safeties crashing down, since that opens the Y-Corner route for an explosive gain. Watch the flow of the linebackers on the run fake: if they bite hard on the play-action, the underneath crosser and drag will be wide open for easy yardage. As the defense, a user-controlled safety sitting deep or reading the corner route can jump the throw and force the QB to check down. Cover 2 or any shell with a deep half safety over the top of the corner route takes away the primary read and forces the offense into the shallow options. Aggressive man blitzes off the edge can beat the protection before the corner route develops, so timing the blitz to hit as the QB completes his play-action fake is critical to shutting this play down.
Call this from Goal Line personnel when the defense expects a heavy run look, especially on short yardage or goal line downs where linebackers cheat up to stop the run.
Read the safety pre-snap: if he is stacked in the box or creeping down expecting run, the Y-Corner route will win over the top before he can recover.
Use the jet motion to bait linebacker flow and widen the defense, then hit the corner route on the boundary if the corner bites on the underneath crosser.
If the defense shows two-high shell or drops a safety over the top, check down quickly to the shallow drag or the crossing route rather than forcing the corner throw.
Pair this play with Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat and Power O from the same set so defenses cannot sit on run keys, making the play-action fake more believable over a series.
