Breakdown

HB Sting is a power run play out of Goal Line Offense in the Normal set, built for short yardage and goal line situations with a 23 personnel grouping (two backs, three tight ends). The diagram shows the HB taking a quick angled hit behind the QB, following the fullback and lead blockers who surge downhill through the interior gaps. This is a pure power run design, not a play-action or RPO look, with the blocking scheme geared toward creating a hard-nosed crease at the point of attack rather than any pass concept. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the play side gap and react to the first wall of blockers, cutting off the fullback's lead block if the initial hole closes.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the defensive box. A six or seven man front with linebackers stacked tight signals the defense is sitting on run and daring you to try it anyway. Watch for a nine or ten man goal line front. If the offense is in 23 personnel and the defense matches with a heavy front, the play side gap will be crowded and success depends purely on leverage. Post-snap, key the fullback's lead blocker. If a linebacker reads the fullback fast and fills the hole immediately, the play is dead before the HB can build momentum. Identify if the defense sends a nano blitz off the edge or interior gap. Since HB Sting has no outlet, an unblocked penetrator can blow this play up for a loss. This play struggles against goal line defenses stacked with extra defensive linemen, but it can still find creases against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts that are not fully loaded at the line.

Usage Tips

Save HB Sting for third or fourth and short, or any goal line situation inside the five yard line where you need a tough push for one or two yards.

Check the defensive front before the snap. If you see a stacked box with extra linebackers or a goal line defense, expect immediate contact and trust your fullback to seal the first level.

Mix HB Sting with FB Dive and QB Sneak from the same set to keep defenders guessing between dive, sneak, and power concepts without changing personnel.

Use HB Power G and Strong Toss as complementary calls earlier in the series so the defense has to respect an outside track before HB Sting hits them inside.

Avoid calling this into heavy blitz packages with extra defenders crashing downhill unblocked, since there is no answer built in if the point of attack gets overloaded.
