Overview

The Normal set in the Goal Line Offense formation is Madden's heaviest standard short-yardage look, built on 23 personnel: two running backs (a fullback and halfback stacked in the backfield) and three tight ends, with no wide receivers on the field. The TEs line up tight to the formation, which compresses the defense and forces opponents into their own goal line or jumbo packages. Other heavy sets spread a tight end or flex a receiver. Normal keeps every body in the box, so you get maximum gap control, extra double-team blockers at the point of attack, and a fullback who can lead through the hole or leak into the flat.

The playbook covers both halves of the goal line chess match. On the ground you have downhill gap schemes like Power O, HB Power G, and HB Split O, quick-hitters like HB Dive, FB Dive, and QB Sneak, perimeter answers like Strong Toss, and misdirection with HB Counter Wk and Mtn HB Zone Wk. Through the air, the set is built around play-action: PA Waggle, PA Spot, PA Sprint HB Flat, Mtn PA Y-Corner, and Mtn PA Mesh all sell the same heavy run action before releasing tight ends and backs into space against a defense that has sold out to stop the run.

The matchup advantage comes from forcing defenders who crowd the box to cover tight ends and backs in man coverage. When the defense counters 23 personnel with goal line personnel, you often get linebackers or even defensive linemen matched on your TEs, and the fullback in the flat regularly beats a late-rotating defender. The Y-Corner and Waggle concepts let your best receiving tight end work against slower defenders into the vacated corner or back pylon, while bootleg action flips the field away from the flow of the play.

Strengths

  • Three tight ends plus a fullback give you extra blockers at the point of attack, so Power O and HB Power G regularly produce double-teams and a lead blocker on the Mike in short-yardage situations
  • Play-action out of a true jumbo look is extremely convincing: PA Waggle and PA Sprint HB Flat pull linebackers downhill and leave the backside TE or the HB wide open in the flat against aggressive run fits
  • Mtn PA Y-Corner is a strong man beater near the goal line, as the Y tight end breaks to the back pylon against a linebacker or safety while the flat route holds the underneath defender
  • Mtn PA Mesh creates natural rubs with crossing tight ends, making it a reliable answer to Cover 0 and Cover 1 goal line blitzes where defenders get picked in traffic
  • The run game has answers for every front: QB Sneak and FB Dive for inches, HB Counter Wk and Strong Toss to punish overpursuit, and Mtn HB Zone Wk to stretch a defense that pinches its interior

Weaknesses

  • No wide receivers means minimal speed on the field, so if a defense stays in a Cover 2 or Cover 3 goal line zone and plays disciplined, play-action routes can get sat on with little ability to win vertically
  • Heavy formations telegraph run intent, and a user-controlled linebacker or safety shooting the A or B gap can blow up dives and power runs before the lead blocker arrives
  • Off-ball edge pressure and corner blitzes crash rollouts and sprint-out play-action quickly, leaving the QB little time to find the second read on PA Waggle or PA Spot
  • Opponents who spam goal line jumbo with a stacked box can overload one side, and without spread options you cannot easily motion into an empty look to count defenders
  • When the opponent dials in man-to-man plus a spy, your slower tight ends struggle to separate and the QB is forced into contested throws in a compressed red zone

Usage Tips

Establish Power O or HB Power G on the first goal line snap to set up the defense, then call PA Waggle or Mtn PA Y-Corner from the same look on the next down once linebackers start crashing downhill

Read the safety count pre-snap: with a single high or no-deep look, audible to Mtn PA Mesh or Mtn PA Y-Corner as man beaters, and against two deep safeties lean on HB Dive, FB Dive, or QB Sneak to win the numbers game inside

Hot route the HB to a block on play-action calls if you see an overload blitz on the playside edge, then take the quick throw to the leaking TE rather than holding the ball on the rollout

Use Strong Toss and HB Counter Wk when the defense pinches its defensive ends or a user is cheating toward the A gaps, since the perimeter is often left with only one force defender

On 3rd or 4th and inches, QB Sneak is the highest-percentage call, but if the defense shows a 6 or 7 man interior stack, check to PA Sprint HB Flat to beat the overcommitted front to the edge
