Mtn PA Mesh out of Goal Line Offense (23 personnel) shows jet motion across the formation before the snap to help sell run action and manipulate linebacker flow. Off the play-action fake, the offense runs a classic mesh concept underneath with two crossing routes settling into shallow zones, while one route works vertically up the seam and another releases outside to the flat for a shorter checkdown option. This is a man beater at its core, using the traffic created by the crossing routes to spring receivers open against man coverage while giving the quarterback a layered progression from the seam shot down to the shallow crossers and finally the flat.
Key the linebackers at the snap: if they bite hard on the run fake and crash downhill, the crossing routes underneath will be wide open in the mesh area. Man coverage defenders who try to fight through the mesh traffic will often get picked or rerouted, so this beats man to man and press man looks particularly well. Versus zone, look for the underneath defenders sinking into the crossers' lanes since disciplined zone linebackers can sit in the mesh point and force a checkdown to the flat. Watch the safety depth before the snap: a single high safety who steps up on the run fake gives up the seam route, while two deep safeties holding depth will take away that vertical shot. A well timed blitz off the edge or a spy on the quarterback can disrupt the play-action timing before the mesh routes fully develop, so aggressive pressure packages are the main counter.
Use this out of Goal Line personnel to catch defenses expecting a heavy run look, especially near the goal line or in short yardage packages where defenses stack the box.
Watch the pre-snap motion defender: if a linebacker or safety follows the jet motion man across the formation, that confirms man coverage and tells you the mesh crossers will have room to work.
Take the seam shot first if the safety bites on the play-action fake, since that is the explosive play in the progression.
If the defense shows two deep safeties and sits in zone, look to the shallow mesh crossers settling into the soft spots underneath rather than forcing the seam throw.
Pair this play with Mtn HB Zone Wk or Power O in the same set to keep defenses honest on early downs, then call Mtn PA Mesh once the linebackers start cheating up to stop the run.
