Mtn HB Zone Wk is a goal line inside zone run out of the Goal Line Offense formation with 23 personnel, using motion to shift the backfield look before the snap. The diagram shows a tight, condensed offensive line with the HB motioning across the formation and then taking a weak side zone track behind a wall of double team blocks at the point of attack. This is a run play designed to beat crowded box zone fronts near the goal line, with the primary read being the frontside double team and the backside cutback lane if defenders flow too hard with the initial line movement.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive line alignment before the snap, if you see a heavy nose shade or extra defenders stacked in the A and B gaps this run will struggle to find a crease. Key the linebacker depth, if they are sitting shallow and crowding the line of scrimmage this play beats aggressive downhill fits by using the double team to move the first level and create a cutback lane. Track the backside defensive end and outside linebacker, if they stay home and do not chase the motion the backside cutback lane closes and you should stick with the frontside zone track. Man coverage shells with linebackers following the motion man in the backfield can be exploited since it pulls a defender out of the run fit entirely. Stacked goal line fronts with extra defensive linemen and no free safety help are the toughest coverage to run against, so avoid this call against heavy jumbo packages unless you have a numbers advantage after motion.
Usage Tips
Use the motion to identify if the defense is running a man shift or staying in a zone shell before the snap since this tells you whether the backside cutback will be open.
Snap the ball as soon as the motion clears the formation so the defense does not have time to fully diagnose and adjust their run fits.
This play is best used in short yardage and goal line situations, especially third or fourth and one, where a crowded box is expected.
Pair this with PA Waggle or PA Sprint HB Flat from the same set so the defense has to respect both the inside zone action and the play action rollout out of identical personnel and motion.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap with linebackers crashing downhill, consider audibling to QB Sneak or FB Dive instead since those punish overaggressive fits better than a zone run.
