Sugar 3-2 is the pressure package inside Dollar. Where standard Dollar sets keep four down linemen or spread two linebackers wide behind a base front, Sugar 3-2 sugars the two linebackers up into the A gaps next to three down linemen, giving you a five-man threat look with six defensive backs still on the field. That alignment is the whole point: the offense reads a potential five or six man pressure pre-snap, but the play art often drops one or both of the sugared linebackers into hook or curl zones, which is exactly what makes Cover 2 Drop, Tampa 2, and Cover 4 Drop so nasty out of this look.
The personnel is Dime 3-2-6, so you get your two best cover linebackers or hybrid safeties in the box and four corners plus two safeties covering the perimeter. Against three and four wide sets, you match speed with speed instead of asking a 78 speed MLB to run with a slot receiver on option routes. That matchup edge is where Sugar 3-2 earns its money: it lets you play true man coverage on Cover 1 Robber Press and Cover 2 Man LB Blitz without giving up a free release to the number two receiver.
The blitz menu is where this set separates from the rest of Dollar. Dt Mike Loop 0 and Dt Mike Loop 1 give you interior loop pressure that beats slide protection, Overload Blitz and Overload 3 Seam bring numbers to one side, Zero Blitz and DB Fire 2 add secondary pressure off the edge, and SS Zone Blitz gets a safety into the rush while keeping three deep behind it. With only three down linemen, every one of those blitzes is a designed overload rather than a straight four man rush, so you are constantly forcing the offense to identify who is actually coming.
Deploy this on third and long or in obvious two minute situations where the offense has to throw. Bringing Sugar 3-2 on second and short invites a run check that you cannot stop with three down linemen.
Alternate between the pressure plays and the drop plays out of the same look. Show the same sugared A gap alignment, then rotate between Zero Blitz, Cover 2 Drop, and Tampa 2 so the offense never trusts what it sees pre-snap.
Always user a linebacker or the underneath hook defender on Cover 1 Robber Press and Cover 2 Man LB Blitz. That gives you a manual answer to drags, sit routes, and the RB checkdown, which are the primary man beaters against this set.
Use pre-snap adjustments to protect your isolated corners: press the outside on man plays to disrupt timing, and shade coverage inside on Cover 3 Sky if the opponent lives on outside comeback and back shoulder throws.
Save Dbl Safety Go and SS Zone Blitz for third and eight to fifteen where the offense expects a standard drop. The secondary pressure and rotated safety look punishes a passive read progression.
