Overview
The Dime 3-2-6 is a defensive personnel group that puts 3 down linemen, 2 linebackers, and 6 defensive backs on the field, and in Madden it lives in the Dollar > Sugar 3-2 set with both linebackers walked up into the A gaps. It is built to answer 10, 11, and empty personnel: the sixth DB lets you match slot receivers and flexed tight ends in man coverage, while the Sugar front disguises who is rushing and who is dropping. Offenses facing it have to identify the true pressure pre-snap and slide protection, and they are pushed toward quick game or light-box runs instead of their preferred spread concepts.
Strengths
- Six defensive backs let you travel a DB onto every eligible receiver in 10 and 11 personnel, so you can run Cover 1 and Cover 0 without leaving a linebacker on a speed slot or a flexed tight end
- The Sugar 3-2 alignment puts both linebackers in the A gaps, which makes simulated pressures and creepers hard to read: the QB cannot tell pre-snap whether he is facing five, six, or only four rushers, and that often baits bad protection slides and hot route checks
- Keeping two linebackers instead of one gives you better run fits and RB coverage than a pure Dollar 1-linebacker look, so you can defend draws and checkdowns while still playing a DB-heavy shell
- The extra DB speed lets you user the middle hole or robber zone with a safety, taking away crossers, dig combos, and mesh concepts that normally shred Nickel and base personnel
- Sugar linebackers who bail at the snap turn into disguised hook defenders, which gives you a strong answer to quick slants and spacing concepts after the offense has already set protection to block the double A-gap look
Weaknesses
- With only three down linemen and a DB-heavy box, heavy personnel like 12 and 21 can run inside zone, power, and duo straight at you, and you have to substitute or accept losing the run game
- When both Sugar linebackers blitz, the middle of the field empties out, so a quick hot route to the RB, a TE seam, or a slant into the vacated A gaps can create big yards after the catch
- It is only available in the Dollar > Sugar 3-2 set, so the formation tells smart opponents a lot. Once they recognize the look, they will audible to runs or max protect with deep shots against your man pressure
- With three linemen and no pressure called, your four-man rushes have a hard time reaching the QB, and patient passers can sit in the pocket against zone until a route clears
- Play-action and RPOs punish linebackers who have to fit gaps from a walked-up alignment, pulling them forward and opening throwing windows behind them in the intermediate zone
