Cover 4 Drop out of the Dollar Sugar 3-2 set is a zone coverage shell built to blanket the deep quarters of the field while sinking underneath. The two outside cornerbacks and the two safeties (blue) all bail vertically into deep quarter zones, while the two inside defenders (olive) drive downhill on angled zone drops toward the middle of the field, and the two slot defenders (purple) sink and squat into shallow flat/curl zones outside the numbers. All three second level defenders shown with red arrows step up and read the backfield before settling into their zone drops. This is a zone beater deterrent, it is designed to protect against four vertical routes and deep crossers by keeping four defenders deep at all times, with the primary post-snap read being the two olive underneath defenders reading run/pass and then sinking to rob any in-breaking routes over the middle.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback press alignment, if both safeties are deep at 10 plus yards you are likely already in a quarters shell that mirrors this call, so disguise it by walking a safety down late. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes to the middle of the field, since the two olive zone droppers are responsible for robbing digs, posts, and shallow crosses that attack the seams. This shell beats four verticals, smash concepts, and deep out and up combos because it keeps four defenders deep in quarters technique at all times. It is vulnerable to quick game and RPOs underneath since the linebackers and slot defenders are reading and dropping rather than jumping routes immediately, so watch for stick and slant/flat combos attacking the purple flat zones. Watch for user-controlled receivers sitting down in the soft spot between the underneath droppers and the deep quarters defenders, that seam is the biggest weakness of this coverage against a patient passer.
Call this play on third and long or in two minute drill situations when you expect the offense to stretch the field vertically with four verticals or deep crossers.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a stack or bunch formation, since Cover 4 Drop can struggle against natural rub routes that occupy the flat defenders.
Use the flat defenders (purple) to squeeze the boundary and force the quarterback to hold the ball, then trust your deep quarters defenders to stay on top of the number two receiver in vertical route combos.
Pair this call with Cover 2 Drop and Cover 3 Sky in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on a single shell pre-snap, then mix in Cover 1 Robber Press to punish receivers who expect zone every down.
Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel since the underneath defenders drop immediately and do not provide immediate run support at the line of scrimmage.
