Cover 3 Sky is a three deep, four under zone shell out of the Dollar Sugar 3-2 formation with Dime 3-2-6 personnel. The two outside cornerbacks and the deep safety run vertical thirds while the underneath defenders drop into short and intermediate zones, with the Sky safety rotating down to add run support and take away the flat/curl area. This is a zone coverage that defends the field horizontally and vertically, making it a strong zone beater counter against route combos that try to stretch the flats and seams, and it is not a blitz package since all five underneath/deep defenders drop into coverage. The primary read progression starts with the deep middle third to make sure nothing splits the safety, then works to the curl-flat defenders on either side to react to crossing routes or flat routes before finally checking the underneath zone droppers for anything sitting in the shallow middle.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two high safeties pre-snap rotating to a single deep safety at the snap, which tips off Cover 3 concepts to a sharp opposing quarterback, so vary your pre-snap safety alignment to disguise the rotation. This shell is vulnerable to deep out routes and corner routes thrown to the boundary since the outside cornerbacks are responsible for deep thirds and can be baited by double moves. Look for offenses attacking the seams between the deep thirds and the underneath curl-flat zones, especially with dig routes or deep crossers that settle in the soft spot between levels. If the offense runs a heavy play-action rollout, the Sky safety's run support responsibility can be exploited if the quarterback rolls away from him, so user control that flat defender to stay disciplined. This coverage shuts down most man beater route combos like slant-flat or spot concepts since there is no man leverage to exploit, but it can be picked apart by four verticals if your deep third defenders bite on any double moves or hesitate reading their keys.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or obvious passing downs when you expect the offense to attack vertically down the seams or sidelines, since the three deep defenders take away go routes and deep outs. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a stack or bunch alignment that could create natural picks against your underneath droppers, and consider shifting your linebackers or nickel defenders to match. Use the Sky rotation to your advantage against outside zone or stretch runs since the extra defender in the flat gives you a numbers advantage there. Combine this with Cover 4 Drop in the same set to disguise your shell, since both plays start from similar alignments but give completely different deep coverage looks, keeping the quarterback guessing between three deep and four deep zones. Pair this call with SS Zone Blitz on the following snap to punish quarterbacks who sit in the pocket waiting on curl or flat windows to open, since they will not expect pressure after seeing a soft zone shell.
