Cover 2 Drop out of the Dollar Sugar 3-2 package is a zone defense built to take away the deep middle and force the offense underneath. The two deep safeties (blue) sink into their halves over the top, the three underdown zone defenders (yellow and gray) drop into shallow curl and hook zones while the corners (teal) sit in flat zones, and the three down linemen rush off the snap to collapse the pocket. Your primary read starts with the two deep halves squeezing anything vertical outside the numbers, then working down to the underneath zones to see if a receiver settles into a hook or curl window before the flats fill against check-downs and swing routes.
Watch the safety pre-snap depth, if both safeties sit at 10-12 yards with a two-high shell that matches this call and confirms the offense sees Cover 2 before the snap. Post-snap, key the underneath zone defenders sinking to their hook and curl landmarks, if a slot receiver settles in the middle window that is your first throw window to jump with a user lurk. This shell gets beaten by deep corner routes and post-corner combos that attack the seam between the deep half and the flat defender, so watch for receivers stemming outside then breaking back in behind the corner. Identify four vertical or three-level stretch concepts pre-snap, since stressing both flat defenders and the deep half safety simultaneously creates natural window conflicts against this zone. Track the three down linemen rush lanes post-snap, if the quarterback has a clean pocket beyond three seconds the underneath zones will start to open up as receivers work back to the ball.
Call this on early downs or 2nd and medium when you expect play-action or shot plays, since the two deep safeties eliminate explosive vertical shots outside the numbers.
Pre-snap, check the offense formation for stacked or bunch receivers to the same side, then shade your flat defender that direction with a pre-snap adjustment to prevent easy pick routes.
User the deep half safety to the passing strength and let the AI play the other half, this lets you jump any deep out or corner route breaking to your side while the underneath zone drops hold the middle honest.
Pair this with Tampa 2 in your play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on the same safety depth every snap, then mix in Cover 1 Robber Press to disguise man coverage looks from the same personnel group.
Avoid calling this on 3rd and long against spread formations with four or five verticals, since the flat defenders can get stretched wide and open up the deep middle seam before the safeties rotate over.
