Example Plays from Dollar

Overview

Dollar in Madden is a six defensive back sub package built on 3-2-6 personnel: three down linemen, two linebackers, and six defenders in the secondary. The base 3-2 set aligns the linebackers at normal depth stacked behind the interior gaps with corners split wide, a nickel over the slot, and a dime defender either walked down or capping the third receiver depending on the coverage call. Sugar 3-2 takes the same personnel and mugs both linebackers directly over the A gaps at the line of scrimmage, giving you a six man look on the front while still carrying six DBs behind it. That pre-snap picture is the entire selling point: the offense has to identify pressure before the snap, and you get to decide after the snap whether those linebackers actually come or bail into hook zones.

Compatible Schemes

Dollar fits pass rush and coverage first defensive schemes that live in sub personnel, particularly matchup zone and pattern match systems that want speed on the field against spread and air raid offenses. It rewards rosters with three or more legitimate cover corners, a slot defender who can tackle, and a versatile safety who can play robber or single high without losing the deep third. Play callers who mix simulated pressures with three man rushes and rely on a user defender to shrink the middle will get far more out of this formation than a heavy blitz caller who needs bodies in the box.

Strengths

  • Speed everywhere. Against 10 and 11 personnel spread sets you match trips and empty with actual coverage defenders instead of asking a slow linebacker to run the seam with a tight end or track a back on a wheel.
  • Sugar 3-2 is the best disguise shell in the sub package game. Mugging both linebackers in the A gaps forces the offense into pre-snap slide protection or hot routes, and you can drop both into the middle to sit on the exact crossers and dig routes they just hot routed.
  • Fire zone flexibility. Bringing five from a three man front lets you overload one side with a slot or dime blitz while keeping three deep and three under behind it, so you get pressure looks without the all out risk.
  • Coverage shell variety within one formation. The same alignment supports Cover 3 Sky, Cover 2 Man, Cover 4 Drop with quarters match, Cover 6, and Cover 1 Robber, which means you can run your entire third down menu without tipping personnel changes.
  • User lurk friendly. With six DBs you have a free player almost every snap, so you can user the deep middle safety or a hook defender and take away the drag and dig window competitive players live on.

Weaknesses

  • Run defense is the obvious hole. Three down linemen and two linebackers against inside zone, counter, or a pulling guard gets you gashed, and mobile quarterbacks will pull the read and hit the vacated edge for chunk yardage.
  • Sugar 3-2 blitzes leave the middle of the field wide open. When both mugged linebackers rush, any tight end or back running a seam, angle, or option route hits open grass immediately unless a safety is robbing it.
  • A three man rush generates almost no pressure without a user. If you drop eight and the quarterback has time, four verticals and deep over concepts will pull your safeties apart and find the honey hole.
  • Alignment tendencies are readable. If you only call Sugar when you blitz and base 3-2 when you play coverage, good opponents will diagnose it in two possessions and start hot routing slants and quick outs against the pressure look.
  • Outnumbered edge contain. Jet motion, orbit motion, and outside zone RPO reads stress the flat defenders because the dime and nickel are often aligned with coverage responsibility instead of run fits.

Usage Tips

Deploy this on obvious passing downs: third and six or longer, two minute drill, and any time the offense shows empty or trips with 10 personnel. Base align out of it against heavy sets or check to a nickel or base package instead.

Use Sugar 3-2 as a disguise more than a pressure. Show both A gap mugs, then drop one linebacker to a hook and rush the other, or bail both and play Cover 2 Man behind it. The pre-snap picture alone forces bad protection slides and quick throws into your zones.

Pinch or spread the defensive line based on the run threat. Against read option and RPO tendencies, pinch the ends inside and user the flat defender to squeeze the pull. Against pure dropback, spread the line to attack the tackles one on one.

Man up your best cover defender with press coverage on the isolated backside receiver and shade coverage underneath or over the top depending on the route tree they favor. Against a slot heavy team, spotlight the top receiver so you are not gambling on a matchup.

User the middle of the field. Take control of a hook defender or the deep middle safety and take away the dig, drag, and seam. That is the difference between Dollar being a bend and break shell and a genuine third down stopper.
