DB Fire 2 is a Cover 2 zone blitz out of the Dollar 3-2 Big Dime package that sends extra DB pressure off the edge while dropping the underneath defenders into a two deep shell. The linebackers and blitzing corners crash the pocket to force a quick decision, while the two deep safeties split the field to take away the deep middle and sidelines. This is a defensive play designed to disrupt timing based passing games and stop man beater route combos before they develop, with the primary read for the defense being the quarterback's eyes to jump any hot route or check down in the shallow flat.
Look at the safety alignment pre-snap: if both safeties are showing deep at 10 to 12 yards, that confirms the two deep shell is intact and the offense may not detect the incoming DB blitz. Watch cornerback press alignment on the outside receivers, since off coverage corners are more likely staying home in zone drops while press corners often signal the blitz is coming from their side. This play beats man beater route combos like slants and out breaking routes on quick timing since the interior pressure disrupts the quarterback's rhythm before receivers can separate. Hot routes and sight adjustments from the offense that attack the flat immediately at the snap can beat this play, so be ready to squeeze the flat with your user defender if you see a bubble screen or quick out concept forming. Post snap, key the running back's release out of the backfield since check downs and screen passes are the primary counter to this blitz, and any delay in your pass rush lanes can be exploited by a well timed screen play.
Call DB Fire 2 on obvious passing downs like 3rd and long when you expect the offense to take a shot down the field, since the added DB pressure gets home before deep routes can develop.
Check the offensive formation pre-snap and look for trips or bunch sets that stress the flat zones, and consider motioning your slot corner or using a pre-snap adjustment to bump coverage responsibilities if you see a heavy run of quick game concepts.
Use your user-controlled defender on the most dangerous underneath threat, typically the slot receiver running a shallow drag or option route, since the zone drops behind the blitz can be vulnerable if a receiver sits down in the void.
Pair this call with Cover 2 Sink LB Blitz or Cover 2 Man LB Blitz earlier in a series so the offense sees a similar pre-snap shell but cannot key the blitz timing, then mix in DB Fire 2 to bring pressure from a different angle.
Avoid calling this on 3rd and short or in short yardage goal line situations since the deep two shell leaves natural cutback lanes and quick throw windows underneath.
