Double Bracket is a Man To Man defensive call out of the Dollar 3-2 Big Dime 3-2-6 personnel, built to smother two-receiver route combos with dual-defender bracket coverage on the outside receivers while the remaining defenders lock up in man across the formation. This is not an offensive concept, it is a coverage play designed to shut down high-low or in-breaking man beaters by surrounding the primary target with two defenders instead of one. The primary read for the defense is identifying which receiver the offense is trying to isolate, then trusting the bracket to take away both the underneath and over-the-top options while the three-man rush and spy linebackers control the pocket and any check-down or draw.
Watch for the offense stacking or bunching receivers pre-snap, since that alignment is designed to break the bracket by creating natural picks and rubs against man coverage Key the quarterback's eyes immediately after the snap, if he stares down the bracketed receiver you can bait a throw into the double coverage for a turnover Beware of running backs leaking out on wheel routes or angle routes, since man coverage on backs is a common leak point when your safeties are locked into the bracket This call gets exposed by quick game and hitches to the single-covered receiver on the backside, so user a linebacker or spy defender to rob any curl or comeback route away from the bracket side Look for play-action rollouts and RPOs that attack the vacated middle of the field, since the bracket commitment to one side leaves light coverage on quick slants and stick routes to the opposite hash
Call Double Bracket on third and medium to long when you expect the offense to isolate a slot receiver or tight end on a man beater like a slant-flat or drag combo, since the bracket eliminates the easy completion window
Pre-snap, identify the offense's number one target based on splits and motion, then confirm your bracket defenders are aligned to double that specific receiver before the snap
Use the flat and drag hot routes sparingly since Double Bracket already leaves your linebackers thin against shallow crossers, so shade underneath defenders toward known tendencies
Pair this call with Cover 1 Robber Press or Cover 3 Lock earlier in a series so the offense sees consistent press-man shells, then mix in Double Bracket to bait the quarterback into throwing at what looks like single coverage
Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel or read option looks since the three-man front and man responsibilities leave light run support, use Edge Blitz 1 or Edge Blitz 3 instead when you suspect a designed run
