Breakdown

Power O out of the Jumbo package's Strong I formation is a gap-scheme power run designed to overload the play side with double-team blocking at the point of attack and a puller leading through the hole. The diagram shows the HB taking a downhill path behind the fullback and offensive line, hitting the gap off tackle with the fullback leading as the primary blocker while the line executes down blocks and a pull scheme to seal the edge. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and it is built to physically overpower base fronts and light boxes rather than exploit coverage. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the play side hole, read the fullback's lead block and the pulling lineman, then cut off the block based on how the defensive front flows.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth and alignment before the snap since stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that can beat Power O to the hole. Identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front with two gappers, since one-gap penetrating fronts can blow up the pulling lineman before he reaches his block. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker after the snap to see if they are squeezing down or maintaining outside contain, which tells you whether to bounce the run outside. Man coverage shells with safeties rotated down into the box are the biggest threat to this play since it adds an extra run defender without sacrificing edge speed. Light boxes with safeties high in a two high shell or split safety look are where Power O hits hardest since it isolates fewer defenders against your double team and lead blocker.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive box count before the snap and only run Power O into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box. Use pre-snap motion or shifts sparingly since Jumbo already signals run, so mix in FB Dive and HB Dive from the same set to keep defenses honest on down and distance. Save Power O for short yardage and goal line situations where the extra blocker personnel group gives you a numbers advantage at the point of attack. User the fullback manually if you have confidence in your blocking reads, since taking control of his lead block lets you pick the exact crease instead of relying on CPU logic. Pair this play with PA Spot or PA Sprint HB Flat out of the same formation to punish linebackers who key run and crash down too aggressively.
