Breakdown

PA Sprint HB Flat out of the Jumbo package Strong I formation is a play-action sprint out concept designed to hold the defense with run fake before rolling the QB toward the sprint side. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep corner/go route while a second receiver breaks off into a shorter comeback/curl underneath, the HB releases to the flat as the checkdown, and the FB stays in to chip block before working the underneath area. With heavy personnel selling run, the primary read progresses from the deep corner route down to the intermediate comeback, and finally to the HB flat route as the outlet against a hard-closing underneath defense.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is stacking the box expecting run given the Jumbo personnel, since that often means single high safety and Cover 3 or Cover 1 look underneath. Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap. If they bite hard on the run fake, the comeback route and corner route will have space to work against a compromised zone. Key the cornerback on the outside receiver's release. Off man coverage invites the comeback route sit down, while press man coverage means the corner route has one on one leverage deep. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flowing toward the sprint out side, since a smart user will jump the HB flat route as the checkdown and bait the throw. This concept struggles against disciplined zone drops from a Tampa 2 or Cover 4 shell where the safety stays deep and the underneath defenders sink into the flat and comeback windows simultaneously.

Usage Tips

Run this out of Jumbo personnel on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) so the heavy formation actually sells the run fake to the linebackers and safeties.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. Two high safeties who bite on run action open up the deep corner route for a big play, while a single high safety often means Cover 3 and you should work the comeback route into the void.

Use the sprint out action to buy time against blitzes since the rollout gets the QB away from interior pressure and lets him throw off platform to the flat if the underneath is jumping the comeback.

Hot route the HB flat route into a wheel if you see man coverage from a linebacker, since Jumbo personnel invites man matchups that this play can exploit vertically.

Pair this with FB Dive and HB Dive from the same set to keep defenses honest, then hit this play action shot once linebackers start crashing downhill on run fakes.
