FB Dive out of Jumbo Strong I is a pure downhill run play designed to hit the A gap fast before the defense can flow. The diagram shows the fullback taking a direct handoff and cutting straight upfield behind the interior line, with the offensive line executing a down blocking scheme to seal defensive tackles and create a natural crease at the point of attack. This is not a man or zone beater since there is no route concept involved, it is a numbers and gap-integrity run that lives or dies on the offensive line winning leverage at the snap. The primary read is simple: get downhill, press the mesh point, and cut off the fullback's initial track based on which A or B gap opens first.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the defensive front: a 4-3 Under or heavy run front with linebackers creeping to the line signals the defense is sold on stopping the dive, so consider audibling to a play-action counter. Watch safety depth, if both safeties are stacked deep in a two-high shell, the box should be light enough for this dive to hit clean. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's first step, if he shoots the A gap immediately he is either scraping to fill or blitzing, and the fullback needs to find the cutback lane. User-controlled defenders sitting in the A or B gap pre-snap are the biggest threat to this play since they can blow up the mesh point before the fullback gets vertical. This play struggles against stacked fronts with a nine or ten man box, so avoid calling it into heavy blitz packages or when the CPU or user shows a run blitz look with linebackers walked up.
Usage Tips
Use FB Dive on early downs when the defense shows a light box (six or fewer defenders) to exploit the numbers advantage in Jumbo personnel. Check the pre-snap alignment of the middle linebacker: if he is stacked directly over the center, expect a quick fill and be ready to bounce the run rather than force it inside. Pair this play with Power O and Inside Zone Wk in your call sheet so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes out of the same Strong I look, keeping linebackers honest and slowing their run fits. Because Jumbo tips run so heavily, mix in PA Spot or PA Sprint HB Flat off the same formation to punish overaggressive linebacker crashes and safety cheat-ups. This play shines on short yardage and goal line situations (3rd and 1, 4th and short) where a quick, decisive north-south hit is more valuable than a home run shot.
