PA Jet Sweep out of Singleback Wing Tight U shows jet motion action with a play-action fake to sell the sweep before working through a three level pass concept. Both outside receivers run vertical seam routes that break off the top of the numbers, the inline blocker fakes the sweep block then leaks into a shallow flat route underneath, and the QB shows a boot fake before resetting to throw off the play-action. This is a play-action shot play designed to punish zone defenders who bite on the jet sweep fake, with the primary read progression going to the two vertical seams first and the underneath flat route as the checkdown or hot read against pressure.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and rotation since single high shells (Cover 1 or Cover 3) are most vulnerable to the seam routes if the safety cheats toward run support. Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they crash hard toward the jet motion and sweep fake, both seams should open up against zone drops that vacate the middle of the field. Man coverage defenders who bite on the run fake will lose their seam assignment, making this a strong man beater against aggressive Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks. Identify any user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot near the flat route, since a smart user player can jump the underneath route and blow up the checkdown option. Cover 2 shells with safeties staying deep can be tougher to attack on the seams, so be ready to check down to the flat route if both safeties hold their depth post-snap.
Usage Tips
Sell the jet sweep fake by holding the motion defender's eyes before committing to your drop, since defenses that key run flow will bite hard on this look. Use this play on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses are conditioned to respect the run out of Wing Tight U personnel. Check the flat route as a hot route adjustment against man coverage on the underneath defender if you anticipate a blitz off the edge. Pair this with HB Dive, HB Inside Zone, and HB Counter Str earlier in a series so linebackers and safeties start flowing hard to the jet sweep fake, then hit this shot play to capitalize on the overcommitment. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, target the vertical seam on the side where the safety shows late rotation toward the box.
