HB Inside Zone out of Singleback Wing Tight U is a straightforward zone run play with a wing tight end attached to the formation for extra blocking gap integrity. The offensive line flows laterally to create a zone track for the HB, reading the frontside double teams before pressing to the second level or bending backside if the alignment dictates. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression is the HB reading his frontside blocking double teams first, then working backside if the frontside gaps are clogged by run fits.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, since linebackers sitting shallow at five yards or closer are cheating to jump zone run flow and can be gashed by cutback lanes. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 under or 3-4 base front, since heavier fronts with extra linebackers clog inside zone lanes and force the HB to bounce outside. Key the safety rotation, because a safety sliding down into the box pre-snap signals run support and reduces the cutback window. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side, which opens up the backside cutback lane if the offensive line's zone track holds. Blitz packages that send extra defenders through the A and B gaps can blow up inside zone before the double teams get set, so recognize interior pressure and be ready to bail into a check release or cutback immediately.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle-to-tackle area. Use the wing tight end's alignment to identify if the defense is overloading the strength, since that tells you whether to bounce or bang the run. Pair this with HB Power O and HB Counter Str from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on zone flow keys, alternating gap schemes with zone schemes to keep run fits guessing. Combine with Zone Fake Jet or Fake HB Zone QB Boot as constraint plays once the defense starts crashing hard on inside zone flow. Stick to early down-and-distance situations like first and ten or second and short where defenses are more likely to play base run fits instead of nickel or dime sub packages.
