Fake HB Zone QB Boot is a play-action rollout off inside zone run action out of Singleback Wing Tight U. The offensive line sells the zone blocking scheme, stepping laterally to open run lanes, while the QB fakes the handoff before booting to the flat. The lone diagrammed route is a deep vertical from the outside receiver, giving the QB a shot play read first before checking down to any underneath option created by the boot action. This is a play-action pass designed to attack aggressive run defense and linebackers who bite on the zone fake, functioning best as a man beater against teams keying the backfield.
Watch for man coverage indicators pre-snap, such as cornerbacks pressed on the outside receiver, since the boot action combined with a vertical route punishes man coverage badly. If the defense shows two deep safeties, expect the vertical route to be capped, so the QB rollout becomes the primary weapon for extending the play and finding room to run. Beware of contain defenders staying home on the boot side, this is the main defensive read that shuts down the play since it takes away the QB's rollout lane. Look for a user-controlled linebacker spying the QB rather than biting on the run fake, this indicates the defense recognizes the play-action tendency. Blitzes from the boot side are the most dangerous defensive answer, since they can beat the pulling protection before the QB gets outside the pocket.
Call this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense expects inside zone based on personnel and formation history.
Look for linebackers creeping up pre-snap or safeties rotating down into the box, both are signs the defense is selling out against the run.
Use the vertical route as your first read off the boot, if the deep threat is blanketed, work the rollout to buy time and check for a checkdown or scramble lane.
Sequence this play after running HB Inside Zone or HB Dive a few times in the same set to condition the defense to bite on the zone action.
Avoid calling this against zone-heavy defenses with disciplined linebackers who sit in coverage, since the play-action fake loses value if defenders do not step up.
