Defensive Reads

If the defense shows two deep safeties, expect the vertical route to be capped, so the QB rollout becomes the primary weapon for extending the play and finding room to run. Beware of contain defenders staying home on the boot side, this is the main defensive read that shuts down the play since it takes away the QB's rollout lane. Avoid calling this against zone-heavy defenses with disciplined linebackers who sit in coverage, since the play-action fake loses value if defenders do not step up.
