HB Dive from Singleback Wing Tight U is a straight downhill run play designed to attack the interior of the defense before the front can flow laterally. The diagram shows the offensive line and TE holding their gaps at the snap with the HB taking a direct handoff and hitting the A or B gap immediately off the quarterback's back, with no blockers pulling and no play-action or route concept attached. This is a pure gap run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, so the primary read is simple: the HB reads the initial double team or down block up front and picks the first crease he sees between the guards.
Pre-snap, check the linebacker depth: if both backers are sitting shallow at 3 to 4 yards, they are keying the run fit and will fill the dive lane fast. Watch the defensive tackles' alignment, a 2i or 3 technique shading toward the play side can blow up the dive before it starts, so bail into a different run concept if you see this. Post-snap, identify whether the defense is running a gap-scheme blitz with both linebackers crashing downhill, since this play has no answer for a clean double A gap blitz. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing to the mesh point immediately, if the human opponent is spying the run every play this concept will get stuffed for minimal gain. Against light boxes with only 6 defenders in the run fit, this play hits fast and hard because the interior blockers get clean angles on second-level defenders.
Use this play on short yardage or 3rd and 1 situations where you need a quick, decisive gain without exposing the backfield to a blitz read.
Check the defensive front pre-snap for a stacked box with 7 or 8 defenders, if you see that alignment consider audibling to HB Stretch or HB Power O instead since Dive struggles against loaded fronts.
Mix HB Dive in with PA Dive and Fake HB Zone QB Boot from the same set so the defense has to respect the downhill run action before you hit them with play-action off the identical mesh point look.
User the fullback or TE blocker manually if you are worried about a linebacker shooting the A gap untouched, since the play has no lead blocker to clean up an unblocked defender.
Run this on early downs against base 4-3 or 3-4 looks to keep defenses honest before dialing up Jet Sweep or PA Jet Sweep out of the same formation to hit the edge.
