Breakdown

HB Power O out of Singleback Wing Tight U is a gap scheme run play designed to pull a blocker across the formation and create a lead blocker through the hole for the HB. The diagram shows the HB aligned in the backfield taking a downhill angle just off tackle, with the offensive line down blocking to seal the point of attack while a puller kicks out or leads through the designated gap. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so there are no route combos to read, and the primary progression for the ball carrier is to press the hole, read the puller's block, and decide whether to bang it inside or bounce it outside based on how the defense flows.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment since stacked or blitzing linebackers can beat the puller to the hole and blow up the play. Watch safety rotation before the snap, because a safety cheating down into the box signals run support and makes it harder to spring the HB outside. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and see if he crashes down hard, which opens a bounce lane for the HB to the outside. User-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill can be baited into overcommitting, so be ready to cut back if the backside is left clean. This run struggles against gap-exchange stunts and interior twists, since the pulling blocker can get picked off before reaching his assignment.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm you have a numbers advantage before snapping this play.

Identify whether the defense is showing an odd or even front, since Power O works best against fronts where you can get a clean double team on the play side defensive tackle.

If the defense stacks the box with eight or more defenders, consider hot routing a receiver into a quick out or bailing to a play-action shot off this look instead.

Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest and set up explosive play-action shots later in the drive.

Pair this play with PA Sprint HB Flat or Fake HB Zone QB Boot from the same set so the defense has to respect both the downhill run action and the boot action off similar splits.
