Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Singleback Wing Tight U is an outside zone run play that sends the offensive line flowing laterally toward the play side while the HB takes a wide aiming point to stretch the defense horizontally before pressing a crease upfield. The wing TE and tight formation give extra beef on the edge, sealing the frontside for zone blocking while the backside tackle and TE cut off pursuit. This is a zone run designed to beat gap-heavy fronts and aggressive downhill linebackers, with the primary read being the HB reading the flow of the frontside double team into the play side linebacker before deciding to bounce outside, bend, or press straight downhill.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front, stretch runs gain more consistent yardage against light boxes with two-high safety shells. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, if they are crashing hard down the line, the HB should bounce it outside the edge for a big gain. User-controlled defenders flowing too fast to the sideline open up cutback lanes, key on the backside linebacker filling late. Aggressive blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge can blow up stretch if the frontside tackle loses containment, respect fast off-ball linebackers stacked over the tackle. Cover 1 and Cover 3 with an extra man in the box are the toughest shells for this run, look for the strong safety cheating down pre-snap as a sign to change the play call.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box versus your run personnel, expect immediate flow and be ready to bounce it outside quickly.

Use HB Stretch on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short to medium) to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action shots later in the series.

Pair this call with PA Sprint HB Flat or Fake HB Zone QB Boot from the same set so the defense has to respect the stretch action before you hit them off it.

Watch the play side linebacker's first step at the snap, if he flows hard to the edge, cut the run back inside against the grain for a big gain.

Against odd fronts or 3-4 looks, be patient and let the zone blocking climb before committing to a lane, do not rush the read.
