Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Singleback Doubles North is an outside zone run play designed to attack the edge before the defense can flow horizontally. The offensive line executes a lateral zone blocking scheme, reach blocking defenders to seal cutback lanes while the HB presses the line of scrimmage wide before deciding to bounce outside, bend to the alley, or cut back inside. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is playside cutback lane first, then the bounce outside if edge defenders overcommit inside, followed by the cutback lane behind the zone flow if the defense overpursues.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are sitting deep in a two high shell the box is likely light and this run has room to hit. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down the line immediately at the snap that opens the bounce outside for a big gain. Key the flow of the linebackers, if they overpursue to the play side call in confidence there is a cutback lane developing behind them. Beware of a stacked eight man box or defenders showing run blitz pre-snap with linebackers creeping up near the line of scrimmage, this play gets stuffed quickly against heavy fronts. Watch for user controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing the cutback lane, a smart user player will sit and read your HB's eyes rather than flowing with the zone.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance to check if the defense is showing a light box with six or fewer defenders before snapping the ball.

Identify odd fronts and 3-4 looks since HB Stretch struggles more against gap exchange and stunt heavy fronts, so audibling to HB Dive or HB Ace Power can be a better answer against those looks.

Manually control the HB and press the line hard to the play side before making your cut, patience is the key mechanic here since defenders flowing too fast create natural cutback lanes.

Pair HB Stretch with Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet from this same set to keep linebackers honest on lateral run fits, then hit PA Rollout or PA Cross off the same look once they start flowing hard to stop the stretch.

Run this on early downs in normal personnel situations, first and ten or second and short, when the defense has not yet adjusted their run fits to your tendencies.
