PA Jet Sweep out of Singleback Doubles North shows a play-action shot off jet sweep motion. The outside receiver runs a deep vertical up the numbers, the slot receiver on that side breaks an in route across the middle then the deep out man converts into a corner-breaking route toward the sideline, and the backside X runs a quick out toward the flat off the play fake. The primary read progression starts with the vertical shot down the seam if the safety bites on the run fake, then works to the deep out or corner breaking toward the boundary, and checks down to the flat route as the outlet against pressure or tight zone coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, identify if the strong safety or free safety is creeping toward the box to stop the jet sweep motion, since that opens the vertical shot behind him. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If linebackers step up hard on run action instead of sinking into zone drops, the deep out and corner breaking route will be wide open. This play struggles against a two high shell that stays disciplined post snap, since the deep safety can rob the vertical route and cut off the shot play. User controlled defenders sitting in a deep third or playing lurk over the slot can jump the deep out route, so read leverage before throwing that combination. Cover 3 with an aggressive underneath robber or a spy on the jet sweep action will shut this down quickly, since it takes away both the run fake and the intermediate crossing route.
Usage Tips
Sell the jet sweep motion at full speed pre snap so linebackers and safeties commit downhill before the quarterback shows pass.
Use this on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are geared up to stop the run, since the play action freezes run fits and opens the vertical shot.
Check the safety alignment pre snap. If you see a single high safety cheating toward the box, hot route the deep vertical to stay on the go route for an explosive gain.
Pair this call with straight Jet Sweep or HB Toss earlier in a drive so the defense keys run action, then punish overaggressive linebacker fills with this shot play.
Against man coverage look immediately to the vertical route for a shoulder or bang throw, and against zone shells work the out and flat combination since it stretches the sideline horizontally.
