WR Corner out of Singleback Doubles North lines up two receivers to each side with a TE and HB in the backfield. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route while the backside slot works an out and up, giving a vertical stretch to that side. To the play side, the outside receiver runs a corner route into the boundary while the slot receiver runs a deep out, and the HB releases into a checkdown route underneath. This is a man beater built on natural high low separation, with the corner routes attacking cornerbacks who are playing tight or trailing, and the primary read progression starts with the play side corner route, works to the deep out underneath it, then checks down to the HB if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Watch for cornerbacks playing outside leverage or press man, since the corner route is designed to break away from that leverage for an easy pitch and catch. Check safety depth and rotation before the snap, because a single high safety who cheats to the play side corner route can undercut the throw. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with defenders sinking into deep thirds or quarters, as these zone drops can close the throwing window to the corner route. Key on user controlled defenders lurking in the intermediate zone, since a smart user can jump the deep out route sitting underneath the corner. Watch linebacker depth on the HB release, because a linebacker who stays shallow can take away the checkdown and force a risky throw into coverage.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells before the snap since this play attacks the boundary corners in isolation on both sides.
Hot route the backside out and up receiver into a deeper route if you see two high safeties bracketing the corner route landmarks.
Use this play in third and medium to third and long situations where the corner route can be thrown before the safety rotates over.
Pair this play with Curl Drag or Stick from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter reads before hitting the corner route later in a series.
If the defense shows heavy blitz pressure, get the ball out quickly to the HB checkdown rather than waiting on the deep corner route to develop.
