PA Rollout out of Singleback Doubles North is a play-action pass that pulls the QB to the right on a rollout while the backfield fake sells run action. The outside WR at the top runs a deep out that breaks upfield into a corner-ish route, the slot receiver underneath him works a quick out to the flat area, the RB releases on a check release flare into the middle void, and the TE on the boundary side runs a vertical seam up the sideline. This is a play-action rollout designed to hit zone voids on the move, with the primary read progression starting on the flat route sitting at the sticks, working up to the deep out breaking route, and using the vertical seam as the home run shot if the corner bites on the rollout action.
Defensive Reads
Key the flat defender first since the underneath out route is the quickest developing throw and tells you immediately if the defense is playing zone or man on the rollout side. Watch for a spy or contain defender staying home on the play fake, since disciplined defenses that do not bite on the run action can rally to the rollout side and cut off the QB's easy throws. Identify Cover 3 buzz or Cover 1 with a robber, since a single deep defender can be attacked with the deep out to corner breaking route once the flat is occupied by the RB or underneath receiver. Look for two high safety shells that roll down late, since Cover 4 or Cover 2 defenders can sink under the deep out route and squeeze the rollout throwing lanes, forcing a checkdown. Track edge pressure and blitz packages that come from the play side, since a fast contain rush can force the QB to throw off platform before the deep out or seam route fully develops.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or manageable third downs where defenses expect run action off Singleback personnel, since the play fake carries more weight before the defense is conditioned to pass-only calls.
Pre-snap, identify single high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1, since the rollout puts the QB on the move away from deep safety help and simplifies the read to flat then deep out.
If you see Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, hot route the underneath flat route into a quicker option or check it down to the RB check release since the deep out will be sitting in a defender's zone.
Roll the pocket away from a lurking user defender by reading which side the Mike or Sam linebacker is shaded to before the snap, since rolling into a spy or lurk defender kills this concept immediately.
Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Ace Power from the same set to keep the defense honest on run fits, then call PA Rollout once the front seven starts crashing downhill on early down run tendencies.
