Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Singleback Doubles North that sells the jet sweep motion before the QB pulls it back and works a single flat/out breaking route to the boundary. The diagram shows the motion man selling the jet fake underneath before the QB fakes the handoff, while the outlet receiver runs a shallow route that bends flat and stretches horizontally toward the sideline. This is a play-action horizontal stretch concept designed to hold linebackers and safeties with the run fake, and the primary read is the flat route created off the fake jet action, giving the QB a quick, easy completion once defenders bite on the run action.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if linebackers are stacked tight to the line or already shifted toward the jet motion side, since that shows they are keyed on the run fake and will be late to the flat. Look at safety depth: if a safety rotates down into the box before the snap, that is a strong indicator of run support that this play-action concept is designed to exploit. Post-snap, key the flat defender or nearest linebacker's first step, if he steps up to defend the jet action instead of sitting in his zone, the flat route will be open immediately. This concept struggles against disciplined zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where linebackers stay patient and do not bite on the fake, so watch for defenders who hold their zone drop rather than crashing down. User-controlled defenders spying the flat or sitting on shallow routes can jump this concept, so be ready to move on if you see a user lurk sitting under the primary route.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs, especially first and second down, when the defense has shown run blitz or crashed hard on jet motion in previous snaps. Watch pre-snap for linebackers cheating toward the motion or safeties rotating down into the box, since that confirms they are keying run and the flat route will come open fast. Use hot routes sparingly here, this concept is designed to be run as diagrammed to maximize the play-action sell, but you can adjust the backside receiver to a hitch or slant if you need a quick outlet against man coverage. Sequence this with Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep earlier in a series so defenders start jumping the motion, then hit them with Zone Fake Jet to punish overaggressive flow. Best used on early downs or in short yardage where defenders are more likely to sell out against the run fake.
