The backside X runs a deep in cut across the middle while the slot receiver on that side runs a shallow drag underneath him, creating a natural high low read against zone. On the playside, the outside receiver runs a corner route into the void, the slot receiver runs a deep vertical to stretch the safety, and the running back releases into a flat route to hold linebackers and give you a checkdown. The primary read starts with the playside corner route against single high or split safety shells, then works down to the flat and drag as the underneath outlet.

Defensive Reads

Read the deep safety before the snap, if he is aligned over the top of the corner route side expect a sink and jump technique from the corner or safety in zone coverage. Post snap, watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the flat or shallow zone, this lurk threat can jump the drag or flat route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can take away the flat route quickly, forcing you to progress to the corner or drag route instead. Man coverage with a single high safety is the most vulnerable shell here since the corner route has a clean angle against trail technique. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink deep into passing lanes rather than respecting the run fake, that signals the defense is keying pass and may be dropping extra defenders into the deep in and corner route windows.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the safety is rotating toward the corner route side, if he cheats late you have a big window for the corner throw. Against man coverage, the corner route and deep vertical create natural separation off the break, so trust the corner route timing rather than waiting for full separation. Use the flat route as your answer versus blitz looks since it releases quickly and beats most nano blitz packages that bring five or six rushers. This play works best on second and medium to second and long, giving you room to take the deep shot without abandoning drive expectations. Sequencing PA Cross earlier in a series sets up defenders to bite on shorter routes, opening the corner route for a bigger explosive play later.
