RPO Glance Post out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset gives the QB a run/pass read with the HB run mesh built in and two pass options attached. The backside X runs a post from the isolated side, stemming outside then breaking hard upfield toward the middle of the field for an explosive shot play, while the trips side has a slot receiver running a short in/curl style stem into a corner breaking route that clears the intermediate zone. This is an RPO built to punish light boxes with the run while giving the QB a glance/post shot and a breaking route on the perimeter as pass answers, making it a strong zone beater against safeties who bite on run action.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since single high opens up the post glance for an explosive gain. Watch linebacker depth and alignment: stacked or crashing linebackers signal run support that should trigger the pass read instead of the handoff. Post-snap, key the post-snap safety rotation, if the deep safety flows hard to the trips side corner route, the backside post window opens up for a big play. Look for user linebackers spying the mesh point or sitting in a lurk position over the middle, as they can jump the glance route and undercut the post. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beaten easily by the post, while zone drops with an underneath robber can take away both the post and the corner route, forcing the QB back to the run.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs when the defense shows a light box or a single high safety to bait the run key. Pre-snap, count defenders in the box and check safety depth: if the safety is sitting shallow or creeping down, pull and throw the post immediately for the big play. If you see two high safeties, take the RPO run key since the post will be capped. Hot route the trips corner route into a deeper corner or convert to a hitch if you are facing a hard press look to give yourself a quicker underneath answer. Pair this play with RPO Duo Alert Glance and RPO Read Y Flat in the same set so the defense cannot sit on one specific RPO shot, then mix in Four Verticals or PA Zone Shot once you have their linebackers biting on the run fakes. Best used on 1st and 2nd down to keep the defense honest and avoid predictable passing situations.
