Breakdown

HB Dive out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset is a straight downhill run play designed to hit the interior gap immediately at the snap. The offensive line blocks a standard interior gap scheme up front while the HB takes a quick handoff and presses the A gap read, using the trips receiver bunch and the offset TE and back to hold defenders wide and keep the box light on paper. The primary read for the ball carrier is the play side A gap first, with the backside cutback lane as the secondary read if the initial hole is clogged, this is a pure run play with no play-action or route concept attached.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth, if both linebackers are sitting tight to the line at four yards or less this play is likely getting stuffed. Watch the defensive tackle alignment, a shaded nose or 3 technique crashing hard into the play side A gap can blow this up before the back gets to the mesh point. Man coverage on the trips receivers with off corners usually signals a lighter box and favors the dive hitting for positive yardage. Zone blitz packages or run blitzes with a linebacker walked up into the A or B gap pre-snap are the biggest threat, since the interior blocking scheme cannot account for extra unblocked rushers. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker flowing downhill immediately at the snap, that lurk defender flying to the mesh point means you should have hit the cutback lane instead of forcing the play side hole.

Usage Tips

Use HB Dive when you diagnose a light box pre-snap, ideally six or fewer defenders in the box after checking the Mike linebacker alignment. This play thrives against nickel and dime sub packages that are built to defend the trips side pass concepts, since defenses often rotate extra defenders out toward the trips bunch and thin out the interior run fits. Pair it in a sequence with RPO Duo Alert Glance and RPO Read Y Flat from the same set so defenses hesitate to crash down on run reads for fear of the glance or flat throw behind them. Best called on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your trips formation pass plays. Avoid calling this into a stacked box or against defenses showing heavy inside blitz looks, since there is no RPO tag to punish that aggression here.
