Slot Drive out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset sends the two inside trips receivers on a drive combo: the middle receiver runs a deep dig that crosses the field while the inner slot receiver clears underneath it on a shallow crosser to the opposite side, creating a natural rub and pick against man coverage. The backside single receiver runs a deep comeback breaking outside toward the sideline, giving a vertical stretch read away from the trips side, while the running back releases on a quick flat route to the trips side as a checkdown against blitz. This is a man beater and Cover 4 beater built on the drive concept, and the primary progression starts with the deep dig on the crossing route, works down to the shallow drive route underneath, then to the flat route as the outlet.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals zone coverage and tells you to hold the dig route slightly longer to let it clear the underneath defenders. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep dig, since the crossing route creates natural separation off the pick from the shallow drive route. Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting at depth struggle to cover the shallow crosser underneath, since the corners are occupied with deep quarter responsibilities and linebackers have to widen to the flat. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the lurk spot in the middle of the field, since that defender can undercut the deep dig if the quarterback stares it down too long. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge get answered by the running back flat route, so if you see pressure indicators pre-snap like linebackers walked up to the line, target the checkdown early instead of forcing the dig.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight on the trips receivers, since the drive concept thrives when defenders trail through traffic and get picked off.
Use the flat route to the running back as your answer versus blitz looks, since it releases quickly and gives you a built in checkdown when the pocket collapses.
Hot route the backside comeback into a deep out or fade if you see the safety cheating hard to the trips side, since that isolates your single receiver on an island.
This play pairs well with Slot 2 Buc and Comebacks from the same set, since defenders who key on the drive crosser after seeing it once become vulnerable to double moves and clearing routes on later snaps.
Best used on second and medium to second and long, since the deep dig takes time to develop and you need a clean pocket to let the crosser work across the field.
